In order to negotiate with a creditor on a negative report that you want removed from your credit report, you will need to send a formal letter to your creditor. The first thing you will need to do is to identify the account that you are disputing. Second, you need to clearly state the reason for your dispute, and third, demand that the negative item be corrected or deleted.

You will want to inform the creditor that legal action will be taken if the matter is not resolved quickly. But be aware that often times a collection agency may refuse to change your credit rating unless they have been instructed to do so by the creditor that assigned them the account.

When disputing with a creditor, you must let them know that it them who was at fault. For example, maybe your creditor didn’t provided you with quality service, maybe their merchandise was defective, the creditor delayed or misplaced your check, they did not deliver the goods, or in someway they did not measure up to their end of the agreement.

Even if you really were at fault, you can still get some positive results through negotiation. For example, you find a “30-day late payment” on your credit report. Lets’s say that it was from a major department store and you had a good payment history with them for 10 years. Even if you were at fault and did actually make that late payment, you can still approach the credit manager and ask if he will remove the negative remark from your report. Often times, if you can say that you had always been a good customer, the credit manager will more than likely comply with your request in order to keep a good relationship with you and to have positive public-relations.

Whatever your circumstances, you can always try to negotiate with a creditor before taking any more difficult steps.
